It’s finally summer (yay!) Now that the weather is warm and many of us are planning vacations, it can be super easy to become lazy in terms of making sure all of your property is secure. Many conniving burglars will be active in warm weather, attempting to make the most of this time where many home and property owners are somewhat more relaxed. For example, many burglars take advantage of unlocked doors during backyard barbecues in order to steal stuff from your home quickly and make a quiet getaway. You can prevent these burglaries from taking these precautionary steps.
Don’t leave your doors unlocked – even for a quick trip.
If you’re dropping by the corner store for a moment, make sure to lock your door before you leave. People might be walking around your neighborhood looking out for individuals leaving their homes without locking their doors. Every time you leave your home make sure that your windows and doors are locked. Door chimes are an excellent idea as they can also alert you to any intruder.
Use Window Stops
On sultry summer nights many people leave their windows open when they sleep so fresh air can circulate. In order to make this a safe practice, put window stops in the windows so there can’t be space for a burglar to slip in. Drill a small hole about eight to ten inches above a window and placing an object that prevents a window from being opened is a fantastic security feature, even for pets or children; nails or metal pegs do the job quick.
Don’t Advertise
Never leave valuables or expensive electronic equipment near windows, or even let them be viewed from street level. This will prevent any passersby from being tempted and scoping your home out as a potential target.
Install Motion Lights
New LED lights are available to consumers that are activated from motion; consider installing these in your backyard so that any trespasser will be immediately illuminated, and hopefully run away before trying anything else.
Never publicize your vacation dates
Don’t post, even on Facebook (you never know exactly how secure your profile is) about when you’re going to be away on vacation. This extends to real life, don’t talk about it in earshot of anyone you don’t have a reason to trust who might be able to figure out what your address is.
Make sure your locks are up to date
This is the single most effective thing you can do to bolster your home security. Make sure all your door and window locks are in working order, and can sturdily hold up to protect your property.
