When you’re looking at smart locks, the many competing brands can be a bit overwhelming at first. In this blog post, I’ll provide a brief comparison between Kevo and August, two of the major smart locks brands with products available on the consumer market.
From the Company
The Kwikset Kevo is a total replacement deadbolt that operates with a push button – all you need to do is touch the outside of the deadbolt with your smartphone (which gets programmed with a custom code via Kevo application.) However, the lock works with a Kwikset Smartkey cylinder, so you will always have the option of opening the door with a manual key. The application keeps tabs on whenever the door is accessed, and by whom. You have the option of sending temporary electronic keys to anyone who needs to visit your home, like guests or workers. These guest keys expire after 24 hours, but there’s also the option of using the two programmable electronic keys that come with purchase, that can be programmed for various times of day – this is ideal for a regular visitor, like a housecleaner or gardener.
The Kevo can be linked up to the Nest Smart Thermostat, so that it activates whenever the door is opened from the outside, and shuts off when you leave. There’s the ability to program thermostat settings based on specific electronic key codes, so that various members of the household can maximize comfort when returning home.
There’s also the option of using an external key fob in cases when there’s no smart phone available – this key fob is included with purchase. With the Kevo Plus upgrade, you can operate your lock remotely via Wi-Fi from anywhere in the entire world.
Kevo has 24/7 customer service, and keeps track of the lock’s usage to an incredibly thorough level. There’s a key fob included, as well as unlimited 24 hour guest keys provided. There’s the ability to use a secondary device or bluetooth gateway for remote control of the lock, so you can operate it from anywhere, at any time.
The lock cylinder is partially made of plastic, making it not as secure as stronger iron or steel deadbolts. There is also a 1 dollar and 99 cents fee for each additional digital key (besides the two complementary ones given.)
From the Company
August offers multiple smart lock packages. The first, the August Smart Lock, allows control of the lock through a smartphone application. Similar to Kevo, August allows users to access a control log that marks down all incidences of door access on a constant basis.
The other package offered by August, the Smart Lock HomeKit Enabled, allows consumers to receive all the benefits of the original August Smart Lock with an added level of convenience through voice control – for an extra 30 dollars. This device has a slightly more industrial aesthetic, as well as a magnet controlled faceplate. This lock was designed by the industrial designer (and co-founder of August) Yves Behar, so it’s quite more stylish than their basic package. It has the option of adding multiple accessories, like a Smart Keypad that allows for door access without smartphones or physical fobs or keys. The August Connect allows users to lock and unlock the device from anywhere on Earth – and of course, all access is duly noted in the log.
August offers a large range of accessories to integrate into your security infrastructure. The device is sleek and stylish looking, and August offers a very available 24/7 support service. Secondary devices are available that allows for control of the lock via Wi-Fi, and there’s no additional charge for any extra keys.
The lock isn’t primed for hardcore security, so it works on the same security level as the average door lock – not as strong as a security reinforced deadbolt. The device has the potential to be hacked – although this is unlikely, unless your home is targeted by experienced hackers. Some consumers have reported lags and delays in the responsiveness between the application and the lock, and even though this is due most likely to software or network based errors, it still means that the lock isn’t quite 100% reliable.
