A resident of Blue Island recently returned from her Las Vegas vacation, only to find that her entire home had been burglarized. An entire section of windows were smashed by a large table, and she had many belongings stolen – including jewelry. The amount of monetary loss from the burglary is estimated to be about $5,500 – an incredibly large amount.
While she was on vacation, she had canceled her mail – and after discovering the burglary, noticed that the mailboxes had been affixed with a piece of tape saying “Vacant, no mail delivery,” with a date. When the supervisor of the mailperson on the burglarized home’s route was asked about it, she said she had no comment. The letter carrier acknowledged that they had placed the notes on the mailboxes, but that it was an isolated incident that will serve as a “teachable moment.”
Shimon, one of our locksmith experts, was interviewed on a CBS News segment detailing the crime, and mentioned that these sort of notes that mention that the person isn’t home basically amount to an “invitation” to burglars to ransack a home. The resident, at this time, has filed a damage claim with the post office.
